Five Questions Worth Asking When You Buy a Car

October 20th, 2025 by

Buying a car should feel good. A lot of what makes it feel good is walking in knowing what to ask.

So here are five questions worth asking at any dealership. Bring them here, bring them anywhere. An informed shopper makes for a better afternoon on both sides of the desk.

1. What’s the out-the-door number?

Not the monthly payment. The total you’ll pay to drive the car home, with tax, title, registration, and every fee included.

The monthly payment is the number most people focus on, and it’s the one that tells you the least. Two deals with the same payment can be thousands apart once you look at the whole picture.

2. Can I see the itemization?

The total tells you what. The itemized list tells you why.

Ask to see the line items broken out, and take a minute with them. It’s the fastest way to understand what you’re actually buying.

3. What is each add-on, and is it optional?

Protection packages, coverage products, and accessories are real products, and plenty of buyers genuinely want them. Gap coverage in particular is worth understanding if you’re putting a small amount down.

What matters is knowing what each one costs, what it does for you, and that you chose it.

4. Can I get it in writing?

A number you were told isn’t a number you can compare. Ask for it on paper or on screen.

This is also the single best thing you can do if you’re shopping more than one store. Written numbers from two dealerships are comparable. Remembered numbers aren’t.

5. Can I take it home and read it?

Big purchase, no rush. If you’d rather read everything at your kitchen table before you decide, that’s a completely normal thing to want.

A couple of things worth knowing

There are fees on every car purchase, and some of them, like tax, title, and registration, are set by the state and aren’t negotiable by anyone.

And the price is usually negotiable. Knowing the real numbers is what makes that conversation a good one.
